Patriotism: Bush v Obama

Patriotism
n: devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty
. . .
The Wingnuts are now suggesting that military service trumps public service as to which is more” patriotic”.

I’d like to refute this absurdity by reminding my gently readers of two gentlemen: Lt. William Calley, and Robert “Sargent” Shiver. Shiver was a devout Catholic pacifist and founding member of America First, an organization that tried to keep America out of WWII.

Lt. William Calley’s claim to notoriety comes by virtue of his leadership in the My Lai massacre.

Based just on this information, who was the greater patriot?

If you have imbibed of the Wingnut kool-aid and can’t seem to bring yourself to favor Sargent Shiver, then I have some more facts for you. Shiver also served five years in the US Navy, and was promoted to full Lieutenant. Shiver earned an LL.B degree from Yale Law School, and would go on to become the founder of Head Start, VISTA, the Job Corps, Upward Bound, and the Peace Corps.

Lt. Calley was convicted of premeditated murder at My Lai, Vietnam after a ten month long trial in Sept. 1971. He was initially sentenced to life in prison; however President Nixon intervened, and Lt. Calley would eventually serve only four and one-half months in prison.

And seemingly there is no need to remind the WingNuts – most of the Bush Administration “NeoCons” and sycophants did not serve in the US. Military: including Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Feith, Rove, Perle, Gingrich, Kristol, Delay, Hastert, Frist, Blunt, Ashcroft, Chambliss, Giuliani, Limbaugh, Hannity, Thomas, Reed, Scalia, et al, ad nauseum.

So what are the wackos’ really saying? That Sen. John McCain is a greater patriot because he served in the US Army, while Sen. Obama did not? Sen. Ted Kennedy enlisted and served in the US Army for two years. So are they ready to affirm that Sen. Kennedy is a greater patriot than any of the NeoCons listed above? Naw, I didn’t think so.

Another oddity: Pres. H.W. Bush, W. Clinton, H. Truman, G. Ford, and Sen. Obama are left-handed. Nixon, Carter, {maybe Reagan}, and G.W. Bush are right-handed – so are the WingNuts going to speak out against left-handed candidates? Oh yeah – Sen. McCain is also left-handed.
