Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t

Some people say that “Obama hasn’t done anything about XYZ” – completely ignoring the fact that we have a constitutional republic where the Legislature is charged with coming up with ‘big-picture’ legislation and controlling the flow of money into and out of the Government. The executive branch is charged with implementing the legislation, NOT MAKING IT UP.

Why have 535 wealthy, mostly white, mostly old men sit in chambers in Washington drawing six-figure incomes, if they are not going to perform their constitutional responsibility to actually DO SOMETHING other than complain about what others do or don’t do?

Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the Supreme Court and still haven’t done anything beneficial for the country as a whole recently. When they controlled the Executive Branch from 2000-2008 they left us with a $17 trillion waste of national resources in Iraq, Afghanistan, and via the Economic Depression of 2008-09.

Pres. Obama has issued 227 Executive Orders during his terms, slightly less than his predecessors; but they have generally been addressed at substantive problems like carbon emissions, stem-cell research, immigration, health care, guns, and international sanctions, which the legislature has consistently failed to address.

Unfortunately some of the same people complain that “Obama is abusing executive authority” whenever he attempts to address some dysfunctional domestic problem, such as immigration, trade and international treaties, health care, and guns which have been ignored by the legislature, or when they do try to address the issue, end up offering ill-considered, dangerous, and faulty solutions. So what is it? Is it reasonable that he be damned if he doesn’t, damned if he does?
